Noticing how little stage artists share about their ways of working and their practices, the Studio-Théâtre de Vitry-sur-Seine, a venue for making theater, wanted to develop a reflective instrument to encourage theater companies to share their creative processes. This instrument, designed iteratively and on site, is called Les Cahiers du Studio and makes it easier to collect traces during creative work. It takes the form of software used in a web browser, along with equipment to capture gestures, words and rehearsal sequences (with cameras, sound recorders, a scanning system, a projector, etc.) installed on a mobile workbench built according to the needs gathered from the companies. Les Cahiers du Studio thus gathers the traces left by artists throughout their work and makes them available for consultation: creative drafts, directing notebooks, actors’ notebooks, set plans and models, fragments showing dramaturgical intentions, abandoned leads, questions, video recordings of scenes, audio recordings of discussions, etc. All this content is visible in an interface where it is organized chronologically as thumbnails. Items can be captioned and resized to give them more or less importance in this timeline. In parallel, thanks to a “journal” feature, companies can collaboratively write stories based on the collected and annotated content.
