do•doc

Designed to document and create stories from hands-on activities, do•doc (pronounced doodoc) is a composite, free and modular tool to capture media (photos, videos, sounds and stop-motion), edit them, lay them out and publish them. Being composite, it can be reconfigured to best fit the situation in which it is used.

do•doc has its own website: dodoc.fr. You will find a full presentation, the latest version to download, tutorials and examples of uses.

A project in do•doc 13, with its panels to capture, collect, make and publish.

do•doc is a composite tool: it combines a software part with a physical part. The software is installed on a computer (Windows, Mac and Linux) or on a server, and is used from any connected device (computer, tablet, phone).
Designed to be built into physical setups that make shooting easier, like lightweight or fixed photo studios, do•doc makes it possible to produce traces of a hands-on activity, thanks to several recording modes (sounds, texts, videos, images, animations). The goal of this application is to easily produce shareable multimedia stories (website or PDF). Content can be edited by several people at the same time, from several devices on the same network. do•doc thus enables collaborative writing, while remaining adaptable to various environments and equipment.

Main features of version 13:

  • content is organized in spaces and projects
  • each project is organized in panels to capture, collect, make and publish
  • capture photos, videos, sounds and frame-by-frame animations, straight from the camera of the device in use (webcam, smartphone, tablet)
  • import media from other devices (DSLR camera, files, websites)
  • media tools: cropping, conversion, targeted blurring (for example to hide faces), batch processing
  • discussions and task lists in each project
  • publications as successive pages, stories, maps or multi-format layouts
  • export publications as PDF or as a website, and share them online
  • use it locally (one computer serves the devices on the same wifi network) or online (server, YunoHost, Docker)

We especially thank Serge Selvestrel, Olivier Fosse and the first grade students of the Lacordaire school for their participation in the development of this project and their valuable feedback. We also thank all the contributors over the years: on our forum, on github, by email, at fairs and in the workshops we ran. Finally, thanks to the Labex Arts-H2H (Université Paris 8) for helping fund the prototype.
