Feuille de Choux
A series of three one-week workshops with various primary school classes in the Drôme. The theme: making a newspaper from A to Z with do•doc, in which the students talk to us about the environment. These workshops are led with the association Désert Numérique and the video artist Sarah Brown.
During three one-week workshops, held during school time between April and June 2018, the children make their own newspaper, on paper and online. They decide on the editorial content together and use playful, artistic, technical and digital means to create their articles, lay them out, publish them and finally share them.
The Feuille de choux project aims to introduce children to journalism: observing, gathering information, making collective editorial choices, summarizing, creating artwork... The children become budding journalists and create three issues of a shared newspaper, bringing together the work of the three classes: a newspaper about the environment, made by children for children.
On the one hand, this project aims to raise the students’ awareness of the media and teach them media literacy. On the other hand, the newspaper’s theme, the environment, leads them to ask questions and think about today’s environmental issues. This topic is offered to the children as a starting point for collective reflection and investigation, which they then share with the people around them through this printed newspaper.
The videos below show the behind-the-scenes of Feuille de Choux. They were made by Sarah Brown during the workshops, with the children:

Feuille de Choux is an arts and digital education project proposed by the association Désert Numérique in 2018, carried out with the one-room primary schools of Cobonne and Saint-Nazaire-le-Désert (Drôme), approved by the French national education system and supported by the Fondation de France, the DRAC Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and the town councils of both villages.
