Fanzine and sound creation — Body

A workshop held between January and March 2020 with Frédéric Danos at the Lycée Colbert in Paris, with Luce Mongo-Mboussa’s 11th grade visual arts class.
During these workshop sessions, the students developed an approach to questions about the representation of the body in the digital age, by making a paper fanzine and creating sound pieces.

Starting from questions about the human body, especially the body in the digital age, each student designed and made a fanzine in the style of 1970s fanzines, using the basic tools and gestures of self-publishing: writing, cutting, composing, gluing, photocopying. Gender, transformation, the augmented body, the fictional body or the combination of bodies were the themes of the various fanzines.

In a second phase, they were asked to think no longer about the body-image(s) but about the body-sound(s). To get to grips with sound recording tools, they carried out sound tests and explorations around a body documentary/documenting space. Three recordings were requested: a body in space, a body in itself, a body with another body.
Still on the theme of the body, each group then created a sound piece lasting a few minutes. Each group had to design, record, select, assemble, layer and mix. Abstract or figurative, musical or narrative, the students were keen to experiment with the creative possibilities of sound as a material, by combining them.
All these pieces were put end to end into a single 9-minute sound piece.
