Calepin: a data visualization tool - Presentation at Artex, October 8th, 2021
Calepin is a digital interface designed to support a scientific approach. It allows collecting and visualizing data, as well as presenting analyses and results. This beta version was designed for the Cap au Nord project, for middle school students on an expedition in Iceland.
Led by the association “L’école face aux plus grands défis du 21ème siècle” (School facing the greatest challenges of the 21st century), the Cap au Nord project aims to raise awareness of the effects of global warming among younger generations. In July 2021, 14 student ambassadors aged 11 to 14 set off on an expedition to Iceland, in a self-managed camp, to carry out 3 scientific explorations – the first in glaciology, the second in oceanography and the third in marine biology. Robotic scientific exploration modules support the investigation. Calepin was designed for the occasion to support the students’ scientific approach, especially for collecting and analyzing data.
Designed together with teachers and researchers involved in the Cap au Nord project, this open and collaborative digital “research notebook” relies on several teaching scenarios built around the question of data (what is a piece of data, where does it come from, what can we say about it, what type is it, how can we visualize it, with which other data should it be read, to answer which question(s), etc.) and aims to develop scientific and critical skills. The students’ analyses can then be shared and included in stories or publications, thanks to the collaborative writing features built into the tool.
